The sun was high overhead now. Even if it was mostly obscured by the higher branches of the tall oaks around him, Harper could still feel its rays slipping past the leaves to touch the back of his neck. Judging by the ambient sort of glow it gave the forest floor, it was probably around noon. It had been dark when Harper had ventured out this morning, determined to get an early start. Yesterday, before he had turned in for the night, he had been close to discovering a crop of wild berries. He knew this, of course, because of the stains on the trees and the evidence of the berries in bird and animal droppings. If it was safe for the wildlife to eat, then, more than likely, it would be safe for the colonists to eat and Harper could finally feel like he was contributing.
Pulling out his plant diary, Harper carefully flipped through the pages, all of which were filled of drawings and descriptions of the properties of each plant he had surveyed so far. He smiled when he reached the page he was looking for, which had his notes on the berry tracking. Using his landmarks to guide him, he ventured deeper into the forest. All at once, the trees thinned a bit and he could hear the sound of flowing water bouncing off of them. Berries liked water, so this made sense. He had just reached the river bank when he saw them growing around the base of a tree, no several trees. They were small oddly shaped berries growing on vines, ranging in color from pink to red, capped with green little hats of leaves.
"Eureka!" Harper all but exclaimed, swinging the backpack cooler off of his back and kneeling next to them. He took a quick sketch of the vines and began gathering berries.
