Personality
On the surface Riley is the smiling effortlessly popular teenage girl, who never forgets her perfectly applied makeup. And to countless people, that's all she'll ever be in their lives: the girl surrounded by all the other well dressed kids.
The truth is, Riley is first and foremost an A-type personality. Driven, ambitious, and always seeming to function under self-imposed stress, this teenager wants life to work out now, not in ten years. So her life runs in relation to goals she implements. They bleed into every aspect of her world, from regulating her own emotions, to making friends, to progressing in her education. It provides structure and aim, and allows her to jot everything down into her trusty notebook with her neat handwriting.
With an at times admittedly neurotic obsession with details, Riley can get caught up and miss the bigger picture. And it makes her miserable. It's the only way she knows how to feel in control, but often she's so caught up in what's supposed to happen next that she doesn't enjoy the present.
Buried deep down, under layers of plans and false smiles lies the heart of an easily amused, sometimes even spastic child. She was once the unapologetic kid in the class who would throw themselves into everything wholeheartedly, and who lived every moment just to find a reason to smile to contrast the sad moments in her life.

History
Riley's family often joked that she was competitive before she was ever born. They'd kid that she probably fought her brother, Miles, the whole pregnancy. Every kick was almost certainly her asserting herself. But of course, that's all it was: a story. Riley and Miles were actually on the same side far more often than they were at opposition. Perhaps people would have acknowledged this if the Douglas twins hadn't been raised in the mountainous, harsh terrain of Osquilon. In Osquilon it paid to be assertive so Riley's competitive streak was encouraged rather than frowned upon and exaggerated well beyond her comfort level.
When Riley wasn't being made out to be a competitive child, she was actually an inquisitive and unpredictable, yet eternally happy child. Always coming up with a new idea to keep things interesting, she earned herself attention and teasing on a daily basis. By the end of her early childhood she could detail more school rules than even the most diligent and attentive honors student- primarily because she'd broken so many of them.
Riley's tenth birthday changed everything. A friend of hers gave her makeup so Riley, being Riley, haphazardly applied a third of the container to her face in one go. Her classmates all laughed and joked at her appearance Riley put on a smile, pretending not to mind until she noticed her parents amusement. That changed everything for her. Her parents had always been immature, more like friends than parents, but never had she expected them to laugh at her. From then on she was careful and more likely to ask her classmates questions before she rushed into her actions. Soon she wasn't someone to laugh at, she was just another pretty face in the crowd.
By thirteen, Riley had it figured out. By any standard, she was popular within her school and within her town. That isn't to say she was particularly happy. More than anything, she was just busy keeping up with everything. Riley would have loved for life to stay the way it was. Each year brought a new level of social distinction, ensuring she remained well known and it seemed to be getting easier. It was familiar and safe.
Safe, that is, up until the council called for her to go to Eden. Being a twin meant there was a higher chance of Riley having twins, which made Riley Douglas a bit more useful on Eden than she was on her home planet.
