The quiet was always welcome to a man who often spent the majority of his time around people. It was an escape, and a welcome one to say the least. What was more, the shade provided a break from the sweltering heat that often plagued them in the summer. Sitting on a flat stone near the edge of the river, Damon kicked off his shoes and dove them into the water, gritting his teeth through the initial shock of the frigid water. Sweat trailed it's way down his brow and he wiped at it with the back of his hand absently before plunging his hands into the water. Cupping his hands, he splashed his bare arms with the cold water, knowing this was more likely to increase his body's heat output due to the initial shock... but the temporary relief was amazing.
Leaning back on his hands, he listened to the birds, relieved to just be away from the noise of the small town. Closing his eyes, it was difficult not to just drift off and wake up past dark, but with the sun already past midday, it wasn't a safe enough risk. To be alone, at dark, this far out as he was... You were offering yourself to be chow for the beasts that roamed the forest. Now at least the worse that could happen is see a deer, bear, wolf, whatever taking a drink, but with the heat of the day at it's peak, it was unlikely any of them would strike against him. He was in no one's territory except for perhaps a snake, mouse, or fowl, all of which he could handle easily. The only thing he was uncertain of was the possibility of handling human interaction while he was trying to get away...

not the one who's so far away
when i feel the snake bite' enter my veins ... Speaking of snakes, Riley Douglas was not a fan of the one slithering in her direction. Fortunately for Damon, she hadn't made it to the river quite yet. She had been following the downward flow of a small creek, though, and was only a matter of yards from finding herself at the river.
"Eeee-aahhhh, don't!" Riley screeched, her brown eyes growing wide, her hands recoiling to a clasped position against her chest as she stared at the slow moving reptile. A few tentative steps backward, away from the creature had the teen standing in the tributary she'd been following.
Already on edge, Riley slid her feet back instinctively, sinking them farther into the water and moving them to slimy, slick rocks. Riley let out a yelp, tossing her hands backward as she lost her balance. Into the water she went, dampening the dark blue denim jeans she was wearing and splashing the plain black t-shirt and tan canvas jacket that rounded out her outfit.
"Nooo ewwww," Riley whined to the snake, her hands again clasping together below her chin. She remained where she was, in the cold water, staring wide eyed at the snake. "Puh-lease tell me you don't swim." player ! COBALT

"Dont!" The word snapped Damon out of thinking, the distant squeal echoing through the trees. Less than pleasant things crossing his mind, he wondered what idiot he'd have to scold for pushing too far... Getting up rather more quickly than usual, he half-jogged his way towards the sound, cutting off from the main river and to up a smaller creek where the water was far more shallow. The silence as he made his way forward wasn't comforting, but a high pitched whine sounded out, and he found her, soaked in river water, hands tucked fearfully underneath her chin, and eyes staring wide at the snake that had curled up on the edge of the river bed. He couldn't help it - he laughed, but only briefly as he looked upon her face.
"There are very few species of snakes here who can swim." He responded calmly, though he couldn't manage to get the tone of amusement out of his voice. It wasn't mockery, mind you. Every person had their fear, however irrational, and it was, in a way, what grounded them. He moved closer to her. "In fact, this one would not harm you unless you managed to step directly on it, and even then, its not even poisonous." He nudged the snake with his foot, and though it hissed and made to lunge, Damon didn't flinch. Wading his feet into the cold water, he offered the fallen girl his hand. "I imagine he is not worth the chill you'll get from lying there."
He took a step back and smiled, shaking his foot in hopes to dispel some of the water from his now soggy boots. The snake had now slithered beyond his view, most likely hiding in the tall grass beyond the barren area lying at the river bed. "Name's Damon. I just got here. Doctor, if that helps, so I think I'm sworn not to bite." He joked. "In all seriousness though, you alright?"

| "No don't~" Riley squeaked, eyes still wide as he shifted the snake with his foot.
Riley really didn't want to move. She'd be quite content following the path of the water all the way to town if it were possible for her to do so without getting completely lost. Which would explain the hesitation she presented when he held his hand out. Chill shmill, it was better than a snake bite! Unfortunately, she was pretty sure the socially responsible thing to do was to take his hand and be grateful. So she did reach her hand up, carefully gripping onto his hand to support herself until she was firmly on two feet again.
"That was pretty impressive," Riley noted, not clarifying what she found impressive. Whatever it was, it brought a smile to her lips and prompted her to step closer and toss her arms around him in a spontaneous- but equally quick- attempt at a hug. Had he allowed it, Riley would have only permitted the gesture for a matter of seconds- easily below thirty. Really, just long enough for the teen to offer a soft, serious thank you, before retreating.
Either way, her next action was already set: she walked past him to the approximate space she- and the snake, originally- had occupied before she got scared, putting a couple of feet between herself and Damon. Once there she turned on her heel to face Damon.
"I'm Riley. I work for the council for now, but I've got big plans here on Eden," Riley declared confidently, her expression the same smile from before.
"Annnd I'm fine. Sorry about that." Riley added, appearing slightly embarrassed in spite of the smile she kept in place. "It's not just the bite I'm scared of. They're so icky and slimy. But you, kind sir, are neither." No, snakes did not secrete any slime Riley had ever seen, but that didn't stop her from using it as an excuse.
"Besides, if you know what to do if a snake did bite, you're pretty much invaluable." Riley kidded. Well, sort of kidded. Mostly, she meant it. |
