that song you softly sing is keeping you from breaking it's a long way down ... Riley Douglas had once heard that by the time you were thirsty, you were already in the beginning stages of dehydration. Honestly, the teenager wasn't sure how accurate it was but it did cross her mind when she considered that she'd been ignoring her thirst for the past ten minutes as the monorail sailed onward.
Absently, the teen turned her gaze from the window she was sitting against so that she could watch people bustle by. Though the monorail was in motion there were still a few people who hadn't yet taken their seat.
"Uhm, excuse me," Riley murmured, drawing her hand up to graze the sleeve of a nicely dressed passerby. "Is there bottled water on this monorail?" This particular passerby was without the telltale sign of luggage, which translated to monorail staff in her mind. Unfortunately, Riley was mistaken. The person she was addressing was a passenger just like her.

Taking a train to the mountains was definitely a spur of the moment decision, one that Atticus was happily taking. He might as well see the entirety of the planet he decided to stow away on, to start anew, well sort of. Seems like you could take the boy off the planet, but no the planet off the boy. But because of his last minute decision, he was one of the last on the trains and therefore the last to be seated.
Wearing a plain black button up shirt with a black tee underneath, not to mention his better jeans, Atticus made his was through the compartments heading towards the back of the train. He wanted to watch from there, though he wasn't sure why.
But as he was walking, a hand tugged on his shirt, causing him to stop abruptly and look down on the intruder to his personal bubble. He heard her question and his mouth stopped working momentarily, as he swallowed his words of irritation. It was harmless he supposed, case of mistaken identity. "Sorry doll. I don't know. But I am sure one of these fine people do." he responded with a wink, gesturing to an actual train employee walking towards them.

that song you softly sing is keeping you from breaking it's a long way down ... Riley stared silently at him for a moment, as if just paying more attention to him might somehow reveal some key to identifying him as just a passenger, not an employee. That, or she'd see some sign he was making a joke that she wasn't finding funny. When he gestured, her eyes followed his motion.
Alright, so he wasn't wearing the same outfit the real employees were. That she'd admit. All at once, Riley's cheeks began to darken from pale to pink.
"Ohhhh..." Riley murmured softly. "I..." Nervously, the teenager moved her arm up, over her chest until her right hand was gripping near the elbow of her left arm.
"I'm soo sorry." Beyond embarrassed, Riley sincerely was sorry. But looking directly at him made her feel even sillier, so Riley drew her gaze away from him and onto the space of unoccupied seat in front of her. That was when she remembered.
"Oh, wait," Just like that, Riley dropped her crossed arm to reach into the dull yellow messenger bag she had at her feet. Tucked away in a pocket all its own were two ginger cookies with peanut butter chip pieces, both wrapped tightly together in plastic.
"Here. It's a ... I-don't-think-you're-a-technician cookie. Truce?" Riley held out the wrapped cookies, a nervous smile tugging at her lips. She could only hope two cookies would foster good will with the stranger. She would have offered him something else if she'd had it, but as it was, those cookies were what was left from her snack collection for the trip to Eden.

Atticus stared down at her, his lip twitching as she stared back, like a deer caught in the headlights. His initial irritation quickly dissipating. How could he be mad when it was so amusing, well at least for him. At this moment he doubted very much that she was enjoying herself. As she turned to the employee he had waved his hand at, a smirk played over his lips, his eyes wandering her cheeks that were obviously turning color.
His smirk changed to a wide grin as she began speaking. The situation very entertaining. He might have to play it out as long as possible, see how sorry he could make her. It wasn't like he was in a hurry, the train wasn't going any faster than before and sitting by himself would be boring. As she glanced at the seat in front of her, he slowly slunk down, crossing his arms across his chest as he did so. "Are you now? You weren't just trying to hold my hand. I might've if you'd of asked me." he commented
As he was about to continue, he watched curiously as she dug into her bag, pulling out what appeared to be cookies. An amused expression crossed his face, "Trying to buy me off so I'll go away?" he said teasinglg, although his voice conveyed a very serious tone. "Can't get rid of me that easily." he responded, slowly reaching out and placing his hands on hers to cover the cookies, informing her to place them away, that he didn't want them.

| Hold his hand? Even amid her panic, the very notion gave her reason to pause and gaze back at him. Had she been a little calmer she probably would have even laughed outright. But what exactly struck her as so funny, she couldn't pinpoint. Was it the fact that holding hands with a guy still filled her with butterflies, even when it was silly and meant nothing? Was it that he was so confident, an undeniably attractive trait in anyone? Or was it simply the absurdity of imagining her intent had been to hold a stranger's hand? He was cute, but was he that cute? And, at any rate, why was he sitting? Riley concluded he must not be too offended.
There was no way to mistake the surprise clouding over Riley's expression when he put his hands over hers. As a self-proclaimed baker, cookies were the surest way to earn favor and not usually rejected. Then again, she didn't normally hand them out to complete strangers with no context. More importantly, this kid was making it very clear that he was here to stay. Exhaling sharply, Riley braced herself for potentially the most awkward train journey ever.
"O-okay," Riley stumbled, offering a small smile at Atticus. She still hadn't moved her hands. This was probably ten times worse now- why hadn't she moved her hands away yet? Riley finally drew her hands back toward herself, unceremoniously dropping the cookies on top of her bag before she set her hands on her lap, placing one over the other.
"I'm Riley," Riley introduced, perhaps sounding a bit more formal than she intended.
"I don't mind if you stay," Riley lied. She did mind. She minded very much. The longer he stayed, the higher the chance that she'd irrevocably embarrass herself and become a laughing stock of Eden. Yes, she was aware of how hysterical her own thoughts were becoming.
"I mean, you don't look like a monorail worker, anyway." Riley added. Another lie. "So, you should stick around until I make it up to you... Or can buy you off, whichever comes first." Lie three. Cookies would have solved everything. Though Riley was now personally committed to ... sort of apologizing indirectly to the stranger, she hadn't thought of it until after she'd said the words "you should stick around" at which point she had to think of something to salvage the runaway sentence. Why had she said it, anyway? She didn't know. |

Atticus sat there, staring at the girl, a grin spreading across his face. It seems he had gotten her flustered, or maybe just shocked her for she was just looking at him. She didn't say a word in response to his hand holding statement. If he wanted her attention, other than shamelessly flirting, his ego would be a little bruised right now. His grin widened as they sat there the quiet deafening.
As he returned her cookies, he couldn't help but notice the surprise that crossed her face. Maybe they were that delicious she couldn't believe he had turned them down, or maybe, this situation has never happened in this girls life. People probably always took the peace offering cookie. To bad he was a little different, he thought to himself. As she stumbled over her words, his grin which had relaxed once again widened. This was entertaining. "Thank you for the offer though. They look delicious." he said, his thumb lightly rubbing her hand as he said it! a wicked grin on his face now.
It seemed that she had enough of holding his hands though, due to the fact she finally removed them. Looking at her he feigned a hurt expression before sitting back in his seat and lacing his hands together.
"Hello Riley, nice to meet you." he responded, drawing her name out. Then he returned,"The name is Atticus." Lifting an eyebrow, he looked at her curiously, inwardly laughing as she mentioned she didn't mind him staying. He wanted to tell her that was to bad because he hadn't planned on moving. But he kept his mouth shut thinking she might possibly move away instead then.
At her next statement, he couldn't help himself, he laughed. "Doll, I don't need you to buy me off, nor do I need you to make it up to me."" although he was enjoying their little time, he didn't need her getting freaked out by him.... Which she might already be. Regardless, there was no reason to make her think she owed him favours. "Am I freaking you out?" he questioned bluntly.
